Leading the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team to a 2-0 week which included an upset of number-four nationally-ranked Hutchinson, T-Bird sophomore Alize Ruiz has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
With both wins coming in conference play to help CCCC finish the first week of conference play as just one of five teams to hold an unblemished conference record, Ruiz would turn in a 20-point, nine-rebound performance in a 75-65 upset of the number-ranked Blue Dragons in a game in which Cloud County never trailed. Getting creative with her scoring, Ruiz would go to the free throw line 22 times this past week, connecting on 21 of 22 free throws which included a 12-12 start to the game against NW Kansas Tech. Adding 24 total rebounds for a 12 rebound per game average, Ruiz would also add five total assists while limiting her turnovers by not committing any against the Blue Dragons. On the year, Ruiz is averaging 13.7 points and 13.0 rebounds per game despite playing only 28.9 minutes per contest and has scored in double-figures in five of CCCC's seven games.
The award for Ruiz is the first time that a Cloud County women's basketball player has earned KJCCC Player of the Week honors this season and first since Te Araroa Sopoaga was named KJCCC Player of the Week last season on February 22nd.
